About Math Modeling
Mathematical modeling is the process of creating a mathematical representation of real-world scenarios. It involves analyzing data, developing mathematical models, and applying them to analyze or predict future outcomes. Example problems include developing a model to predict changes in the housing supply in the next 50 years, creating a vulnerability score for neighborhoods, allowing city officials to efficiently allocate resources in the event of a heat wave, and evaluating whether or not certain sports should be added to the future Olympic games based on some criterion.
Competitions

The M3 Challenge is a unique academic contest for high school juniors and seniors that focuses on applying math to real-world scenarios through modeling, coding, technical writing, and data analysis. Teams of up to five students participate in a 14-hour virtual competition over a February weekend, with finalists invited to present at Jane Street headquarters in New York City. Schools may submit up to two teams, and preparation includes modeling practice, coding, and strategic data analysis. Competitors can win scholarships of up to $20,000, special computing prizes, and national recognition.
