VEX V5

What it is

VEX V5 is the high school division of the world’s largest robotics competition, where teams design, build, and program robots using metal parts to complete a new game released each year. Teams typically consist of 4 to 6 students who collaborate to develop their robot’s design, strategy, and coding skills. Unlike VEX IQ, which uses plastic pieces, VEX V5 robots are constructed with metal components, allowing for more advanced engineering and programming challenges. The competition includes distinct games from the IQ division, with teams competing in teamwork, robot skills, and autonomous challenges throughout the season. Events take place year-round, leading to State competitions usually held in the spring, where top teams qualify for the World Championship in May. Preparation involves rigorous team meetings, design iterations, programming practice, and participation in scrimmages or invitational events. Awards recognize excellence in robot design, programming, teamwork, and overall performance, with advancement opportunities from local to state and world-level competitions.
